Webinar on Rights of Senior Citizens

A webinar on Rights of Senior citizens was organized on 17th may 2022 in association with Balli FATORPA Legal Aid Clinic. The resource person was Adv. Sicletica Fernandes. Balli Fatorpa Legal Aid Cell had organised a webinar on RIGHT OF SENIOR CITIZENS IN INDIA. Resource person for the webinar was Adv. Sicletica Fernandes, academic mentor for Balli Fatorpa Legal Aid Cell. During the webinar the resource person covered on the act providing maintenance of parents and senior citizens under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007. Welcome address was given by Iram Shaikh & introduction of the resource person was done by Jayesh Velip

Adv. Sicletica Fernandes explained the benefits of this act. This act gives protection to life of senior citizens & their property given under Chapter V Sec. 23 of THE MAINTENANCE AND WELFARE OF PARENTS AND SENIOR CITIZENS ACT, 2007. Sec 23 says that property can be taken back that is contract can be void if parents are not taken care by their children. Any matter regarding senior citizen should be disposed of within 90 days. Maintenance for senior citizens include food, clothing and money. Any relative in major can be asked for maintenance. If the maintenance in the form pf money within 3 months then the senior citizens can approach the tribunal. Even Mother-in-law can sue her Daughter-in-law. Adv. Sicletica also mentioned Tarun Saxenas case, where the court held that Advocate can represent in maintenance tribunal case.

Other benefits include concession in railway tickets separate Queue in hospital for senior citizens and even separate seats in the buses for senior citizens.

Webinar was attended by all the members of Balli Fatorpa Legal aid cell and other dignitaries. After the talk, attendees asked different questions on the topic.
