ONLINE SERIES ON CYBER CRIMES RELATING TO WOMEN AND CHILDREN

The Child Rights Cell & Women’s Cell of VVM’s G. R. Kare College of Law in Association with One Stop Centre (Sakhi), South Goa, organized as part of  the lecture series on laws relating to women & children  a webinar on the topic “CYBER CRIMES RELATING TO WOMEN & CHILDREN”. The webinar was conducted on the 22nd of  November 2021 at 5:30 pm. The opening speech was given by our principal Dr. Saba V. M. Da Silva.

There were two resource persons:-

  1. Vidyanand Pawar, PI , Cyber Crimes P.S Goa
  2. Amey Prabhudessai, Advocate, Goa(ALUMNUS OF GRKCL)

First resource person was introduced by Ms. Asmita Naik, Asst Professor G. R. Kare College of Law that is Mr. Vidyanand Pawar, PI , Cyber Crimes P.S Goa. He started with the concept of Cyber Crimes, he said that the Cybercrime is a crime with the use of computer. He also discussed about various types of cybercrime they are as follows:

 

  1. Cyber stalking – Is  a use of the internet or other electronic means to stalk or harass an individual group or organization it includes false acquisition, defamation it may also include monitoring, identity threats , Vandalism, blackmailing etc. There was an illustration given by him suppose any person logging in girls profile and stalk her unknowingly that amounts to cyber stalking. He finds her weakness and then send her message or video.
  2. Cyber bullying-Is used to describe many different kinds of online abuse including but not limited to harassment doxing, reputation, attacks and revenge porn.
  3. Fake social media Profile– This contain fake information or photo of some other person a celebrity or steal the identity of another person. For eg making fake Facebook Profile etc
  4. ATM Skimming – It is a way of stealing PINs and other information of credit and debit card by ragging machines with hidden recording devices . Thieves then use stolen information to produce fake cards and spend victims money or take cash from their Bank Account.
  5. Phishing – It means fraudulent practice of making phone calls or leaving voice messages purporting from reputable companies in order to induce individuals to reveal personal information such as bank details and credit card numbers.

 

  1. Smishing –The fraudulent practice of sending text messages purporting to be reputable companies in order to induce individuals to reveal personal information such as password or credit card number.
  2. Smishing on whatsapp– Whatsapp message receives from anyone that you cannot recoginse  in case of known contacts any URL that contains special character or shortened URL Such link shall not be opened as it is a good security practiced not to open any attachment or link
  3. Pishing– Pishing on whatsapp – Link will be sent to click and to get offer detail . Eg- Amazon fake website where low price products are shown in  order to attract people to purchase that product but it is a fake product.
  4. Cyber Sex Trafficking-Cyber crime carried out partly by means of computers and the internet traffickers transport victims to a cyber sex dens and use web cams to stream sexual assault in real times through a computer to the internet for a live distant purchaser  across the world.
  5. Online Job frauds– Link is sent to the job seeker and they ask for money to provide job thereafter they start avoiding them. So in this way are being cheated
  6. Matrimonial Fraud– After posting an impressive online profile on matrimonial Site posting as prospective bridegroom, fraudsters befriend women. Once they gain confidence, the fraudsters ask women to transfer money into their bank account stating an emergency.
  7. Chinese app or online Game-They are acting as a spy app taking that into consideration Government of India has banned certain apps.

 

He also spoke about new trends in cyber crimes where he mentioned about fake educational Institution site where admission are being done online he said that it is necessary that the site has to be the original site of the institution whenever you are making payment.

Thereafter he also pointed out various penalties which are mentioned under Information Act 2000 for any person who commits online fraud such as Section 65, 66 etc.

The second speaker of the day was Mr. Amey Prabhudessai, Advocate (Criminal). He was introduced by the Ms. Apoorva Prabhudessai, Asst Professor G. R. Kare College of Law. He began with the concept of cyber crime and he discussed about the various cyber crimes are as follows:-

  1. Crime committed against individual- Means sending email, cyber stalking , cyber bullying etc
  2. Crime Committed against Organization- Unauthorized distribution of pirated software
  3. Crime committed against Society- Online gambling
  4. Harassment through email
  5. Cyber defamation- Infringement  someone name
  6. Cyber Bullying
  7. Sexual Abuse of women and using phonography
  8. Crime against children –Lack of personal attention by the parents  which may be result in sexual abuse of children

 

Solution to fight against cyber crime

 

  1. Password should be strong
  2. Wifi in Public should not be use
  3. Email and Sms of unknown person should be avoided
  4. No Sharing of information on social media

 

The effect of cybercrime due to ongoing pandemic on children – This aspects focus on POCSO Act 2012 wherein the complaint can be filed relating to any offence against the child which is committed in electronic form. With this he concluded with his speech.

 

The special invitee for the session was Auda Veigas President Bailancho Ekvott she was introduced by Ms. Ruby Luis, Asst Professor G. R. Kare College of Law. She started with a brief description of One Stop Centre (SAKHI) South Goa. She said that these Centres are being established across the country to provide integrated support and assistance under one roof to women affected by violence. She also spoke about the objective of one stop centre and also the services which are being provided by the centre. Such as medical assistance, assistance to women in lodging FIR, legal aid and counseling, emergency response and rescue services.

 

The session was ended by answering the queries of the students followed by Vote of thanks by Dr. Shruti Nadkarni, Asst Professor G. R. Kare College of Law.
