2-Day National Conference on “Empowering Persons with Disabilities and Ensuring Inclusiveness and Equality.”

The VVMS Govind Ramnath Kare College of Law, in collaboration with the State Commission for Persons with Disabilities (Goa) and Junior Chamber International (JCI Vasco), proudly announces the successful conclusion of a seminal two-day National Conference centered on “Empowering Persons with Disabilities and Ensuring Inclusiveness and Equality.” On 26th and 27th April 2024.

Amidst a gathering of esteemed dignitaries, Mr. Peter Borges, Honorable Chairperson of the Goa State Child Rights Commission, graced the inaugural session as Chief Guest, accompanied by Mr. Taha Hazeeq, Secretary of the Goa State Commission on Persons with Disabilities, serving as Guest of Honor. The event witnessed the convergence of leading voices and experts dedicated to advancing the discourse on disability rights and inclusivity.

The first day commenced with Dr. Vijay Kishor Tiwari from the esteemed West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences elucidating the intricate contours of disability movements in India. Following this, Ms. Shampa Sen Gupta, Director at Shruti Disability Rights Center Kolkata, provided invaluable insights into fostering accessibility and inclusive practices within higher education institutions. Ms. Percy Cardoso, a revered Mental Health Professional at Sangath, delved into the nuanced aspects of mental health and wellbeing among persons with disabilities.

Day two of the conference showcased a diverse array of topics, beginning with Adv. Amar Jain, a Corporate Lawyer and certified professional in web accessibility, outlining innovative strategies for establishing inclusive online spaces. Adv. Salman Khan, a preeminent Disability Rights Advocate, passionately addressed the vital issue of sexual and reproductive rights for women with disabilities in India. Mr. Prakash Kamat, National Director of DEI First Sutra Foundation and a respected Senior Journalist, underscored the indispensable role of media in empowering individuals with disabilities.

The valedictory ceremony, graced by Chief Guest Mrs. Sarika Fal Dessai, Secretary of District Legal Services Authority, South Goa, served as a fitting culmination to the conference. With 56 participants engaging actively across both online and physical platforms and presenting 24 research papers spanning diverse themes, the event marked a significant milestone in advancing the cause of inclusivity and equality for persons with disabilities.

This pioneering initiative not only fostered meaningful dialogue and knowledge dissemination but also laid the groundwork for tangible actions aimed at creating a more inclusive society.
